Expert Summary

A hybrid mineral-chemical SPF 50 PA++++ sunscreen with brightening actives - Papaya Extract (Papain enzyme) and Zinc Oxide alongside chemical filters Octinoxate, Avobenzone, and Benzophenone-3. The critical concern shared with the Hydrate+ variant: Benzophenone-3 (Oxybenzone) is present alongside Octinoxate - both are documented endocrine disruptors under regulatory review and both are banned in marine-protected areas for coral toxicity. An additional formulation note: Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Extract is present in a leave-on daytime product; furocoumarins in grapefruit extract have phototoxic potential. Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) is an EU-restricted cyclic silicone. The brightening actives (Papaya, Ceramide) and the UV system are coverage-effective, but the filter safety profile is a meaningful trade-off.

Two UV filters carry hormonal disruption concerns: Benzophenone-3 (Oxybenzone), with more established evidence of endocrine disruption and systemic absorption, and Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (Octinoxate), whose EU max was reduced in 2023. Both are India-permitted but represent a stacking of endocrine-concern filters in a daily-use product. Additionally, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Extract is present in this leave-on daytime formula - grapefruit contains furanocoumarins that can sensitise skin to UV light (phototoxicity). Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) is restricted in EU rinse-off products and faces increasing environmental scrutiny. No fragrance, no parabens.

Formula Design
Strong16/20

Multi-filter formula designed for broad-spectrum coverage and photostability.

The hybrid mineral-chemical UV system provides reliable broad-spectrum coverage. TiO2 and ZnO add mineral reliability; Avobenzone covers full UVA range. Papaya Extract's Papain enzyme provides genuine gentle brightening at cosmetic concentrations. Ceramide adds barrier benefit to a sunscreen. Blueberry and Trehalose provide antioxidant support. Titanium Dioxide at tail position (35 of 37) suggests it is present at very low concentration - the mineral contribution to UV protection may be minor relative to the chemical filters.

Claims Evidence
Strong15/20

Good evidence for stated claims based on public information.

Full ingredient list on aqualogica.in. SPF 50 and PA++++ are stated. UV filter identities are named. However, Benzophenone-3 (Oxybenzone) is not called out in the product communication despite its established concern profile. Grapefruit Extract's phototoxic potential in a daytime leave-on is not mentioned. No concentrations for brightening actives disclosed.

Ethics & Sustainability
Concern4/10

Cruelty-free claim.

Cruelty-free claim. Vegan. Fragrance-free. Both Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are documented coral bleaching agents banned in Hawaii, Palau, and other marine-protected zones. Having both in one formula is a significant environmental concern. HUL brand with Unilever Compass commitments. Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) is an environmental persistence concern.

🇮🇳

PA++++ and broad-spectrum coverage are essential for India's intense year-round UV exposure. The Papaya brightening adds relevance for PIH-prone darker Indian skin tones. However, Indian consumers preferring to avoid Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3) should note its presence alongside Octinoxate. Grapefruit Extract in a daytime leave-on warrants awareness for users with reactive skin. Reapply every 2 hours of direct sun exposure.
