Expert Summary

Aqualogica's hero sunscreen uses a hybrid mineral-chemical UV filter system: Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Octinoxate, and Avobenzone for broad-spectrum coverage. The critical concern is Benzophenone-3 (Oxybenzone) - a UV filter with more established endocrine disruption evidence than Octinoxate, banned in Hawaii, Palau, and several marine-protected areas due to coral reef toxicity. Both Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are present in this daily-use leave-on formula applied in meaningful quantities - a significant stacking of hormonal-concern filters. The mineral filters (TiO2, ZnO) add coverage reliability and the hybrid approach achieves a white-cast-free finish. Ceramide 11 provides barrier support. Hyaluronic Acid and Trehalose deliver hydration. Coconut Water appears at INCI position 19 - a supporting ingredient, not the primary hydrating base. Fragrance-free. PA++++ confirms highest UVA protection category.

Ingredient Safety
Good33/50

Two UV filters in this formula carry hormonal disruption concerns.

Two UV filters in this formula carry hormonal disruption concerns. Benzophenone-3 (Oxybenzone) has more established evidence of endocrine disruption than Octinoxate: it has been detected in blood and urine after topical application, is banned in several marine-protected areas, and is one of the most scrutinised UV filters globally. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (Octinoxate) is separately flagged - the EU reduced its permitted maximum in 2023 due to endocrine disruption data. Having both in a product applied daily and in generous quantities (the 2-finger-length rule) is a meaningful stacking of concern. Both remain India-permitted. Mineral filters TiO2 and ZnO are inert and safe. Fragrance-free and paraben-free.

Formula Design
Strong16/20

Multi-filter formula designed for broad-spectrum coverage and photostability.

The hybrid mineral-chemical UV filter system provides reliable broad-spectrum coverage: TiO2 handles UVB and short UVA, ZnO extends to longer UVA, Avobenzone covers the full UVA range, and Octinoxate contributes UVB absorption. The combination is coverage-effective even without a dedicated next-generation photostabiliser. Ceramide 11 adds genuine barrier value to a sunscreen. Hyaluronic Acid and Trehalose support hydration alongside Xylitol and NMF component Sodium Lactate. Melanin as an ingredient is an interesting novel inclusion. Coconut Water at position 19 is a supporting ingredient rather than a core hydrating base as implied by the brand.

Claims Evidence
Strong15/20

Good evidence for stated claims based on public information.

Full ingredient list is published on aqualogica.in. SPF 50 and PA++++ are clearly stated. UV filter identities are visible in the INCI list. However, the brand's marketing and product positioning around Coconut Water as a primary hydration driver is not supported by the INCI position (19 out of 28) - it is a supporting ingredient, not the primary hydrating agent. The presence of Benzophenone-3 (Oxybenzone) is not highlighted or acknowledged in product communications. Active concentrations are not disclosed.

Ethics & Sustainability
Concern4/10

Cruelty-free claim.

Cruelty-free claim. Vegan formula. Fragrance-free. Both Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are documented marine ecosystem toxins: both have been banned in Hawaii, Palau, Aruba, and several other marine-protected zones for causing coral bleaching and reef damage. Having both filters in one formula is a significant environmental concern. HUL brand with published Unilever Compass sustainability commitments. Packaging is widely recyclable.

🇮🇳

PA++++ is essential for Indian conditions where UVA-driven PIH is a primary concern across darker Fitzpatrick skin tones. The hybrid mineral-chemical formula achieves a white-cast-free finish that makes daily SPF compliance more realistic. However, Indian consumers who prefer to avoid Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3) - due to its endocrine disruption and marine toxicity profile - should note it is present in this formula. Reapply every 2 hours of direct sun exposure. The dewy finish may feel heavy for oily skin types during humid Indian summers.
